This incredible hoodie honours the Halifax Eurekas of the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, founded in 1895 by Black ministers looking to build their congregations by offering hockey as a post service activity. The three founding teams were the Dartmouth Jubilees, the Halifax Stanley, and the Halifax Eurekas.

The Eurekas lost the first season but were champions for the next 5 years, making them the first hockey dynasty. Eddie Martin of the Eurekas is also the first player known to take a slap shot, while the league also boasts goaltender Henry “Braces” Franklyn, the first goalie to leave his feet to stop and cover pucks, and whom also liked to venture from his net to make plays. It was an innovative league boasting fast and physical play, with attendance rivalling and at times exceeding that of local white hockey games.

Eventually succumbing to politician and racial injustice, the league would fold by the time of WWII where it would become a mostly forgotten footnote in the history of hockey. However, the innovations of the game would become an integral part of the hockey we know and love today.
